The Petreikis boys, like their father, grew up spending their summers in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Like all young boys, they took to enjoying all of the natural wonders that the Northwoods had to offer. Their greatest thrill was found in hunting the elusive musky. If the frequency of catching the brutes was not enough, the legend of Murphy kept reeling the boys back in.
At some point in the early 1950's, their Grandpa purchased a majority of the property surrounding a small lake in the Northwoods. The 50-acre body of water was a murky swamp lake. Water the color of black coffee, it was not a lake that you went swimming in, by choice. If you did happen to fall in, you were going to smell like the rotting debris comprising the bottom of the lake.
Their Grandpa, Grandma, Dad, his Brother, and their in-laws started working to find what was hiding in the lake. Early in their search, they came upon Murphy. Over the course of several years, Murphy made it known that you were fishing in HIS lake.
One of Murphy's first appearances was not even on a fishing lake. Grandpa was fishing around the lake and set his pole down to work on something in the boat. The tip of the pole had a lure suspended above the water, just behind the boat. Started by a sudden "whoosh" behind the boat, Grandpa turned to see the tail of Murphy about six feet behind his lure.
In the following days, Murphy proceeded to get hooked by their Great-Uncle. During a tail-walking fight, Murphy launched the lure from his mouth and landed it in the boat at their Great-Uncle's feet. Murphy once again appeared in a fight against our Great-Aunt. While fishing with her Brother, they hooked into Murphy. Murphy decided to dive for the bottom. After pulling their small boat around the lake, a cut of the line and Murphy was gone.
Their Dad had the last known sighting of Murphy. He and his Cousin decided to put some set-lines out around the lake one night. As they retrieved the lines the following morning, one had something really heavy on it. Pulling it into shore, a musky with eyes six inches apart emerged from the water. Seeing HIS captors, Murphy turned and shot back out into he lake. Burning their hands, he snapped the line. As fast as Murphy had appeared, he was gone. Like their Grandpa, our Dad said that Murphy's tail was six feet behind his head.
Murphy was never caught. As a kid, 30 years after the last sighting, we would ask Grandma if she thought Murphy was still alive. The best answer we could get as a kid was, "I don't know." That's what kept pushing us to go back...
With muskies, like most things in life, size does matter! In a fun way, we decided to create a T-shirt line that pokes a little fun at the dual meaning words.
Thus, the creation of Dix...
